Top-seeded Sun Yingsha of China defeated Charlotte Lutz of France in straight sets to reach the women’s singles round of 16 at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Championships in Doha on Wednesday. The 24-year-old cruised to an 11-4, 11-6, 11-6, 11-1 victory over the 20-year-old World No. 92.
“This was our first meeting, and I had studied her match videos,” said Sun after the 29-minute contest. “She is young and promising.”
Sun’s next opponent will be South Korea’s Shin Yu-bin, who outlasted Italy’s Gaia Monfardini 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 14-12, 16-14.

China’s Wang Manyu also advanced to the last 16 after beating Germany’s Ying Han 12-10, 12-10, 9-11, 11-4, 13-11. Facing one of the sport’s top defensive players, Wang was visibly frustrated at times, but successfully closed out the victory in the end. The World No. 2 will face Bernadette Szocs of Romania for a place in the quarterfinals.

On the men’s side, top seed Lin Shidong came up short in mixed doubles competition in his first match of the day. He then dropped the first game of his men’s singles match against Sweden’s Kristian Karlsson, but recovered to take the next four games and claim an 8-11, 11-1, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9 victory. The come-from-behind win sent him into the round of 16.
